No two students learn the same way so it is important to use a variety of methods for delivering instruction. It is my job to teach students various strategies they can use when tackling assignments.
Students struggle with organizing thoughts and ideas for longer pieces of writing. For this particular assignment, students were to write a five-paragraph essay on how Suzanne Collins uses imagery in her novel The Hunger Games. After modeling how to use a variety of organizers, students could then pick which one worked best for them. Students may have approached the task differently, but every one of them was able to complete the task I put on them.

Our student blog, Hoyt Rocks 2013, allows students to complete a variety of assignments online at their own pace. In addition to online writing assignments, students can watch videos related to articles we've read, such as Oscar Pistoriou a.k.a. Blade Runner- the first paraplegic to compete along side able-bodied runners in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Students can also watch content videos that explain theme and point of view.

For this particular assignment, students worked in partners to post a RAFT into blogger. Students had to write a script that mirrored the events of our class read aloud novel. The more vocabulary words and key terms they used correctly, the more points students received.
The scripts were used at a later time as a partner reading fluency exercise.

Another activity students completed for the same novel allowed them to use art to demonstrate their understanding. As I read a chapter form our class read aloud, I stopped periodically to have students complete a quick draw of the events rather than write a summary. In addition to their sketch, students had to write a caption that stated main ideas from the chapter.
