Today we are going to complete a Type 3 response that analyzes the various ways author, Suzanne Collins, uses the mockingjay as a symbol in Catching Fire. A symbol is a person, place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself. *We will also have a Type 2 quiz today over Chapter 10. Today we are going to read chapters 10, 11, and 12. In these chapters, Katniss learns more about the strange Peacekeepers she met in the woods and we see just how far the Capitol is willing to go in order to regain control in the Districts. In chapter 12, we will discover what special twist is in store the the Quarter Quell games. Bad news: we have a test. Good news: this is our last test of the unit! Today you will be taking your last Benchmark Test for unit 1. Test 4 is over questioning, inferences, and interpretation. Be sure to answer all parts of the prompt for questions 7, 8, and 9. Question 10 is optional.

Get your read on! Today we are going to read chapters 8 and 9 finishing up Part 1 of our book. We will be in the computer lab Monday and Tuesday. Your Goals: 1. Complete any SRI make ups 2. Unit 1 Reflection post 3. Choose 1 Catching Fire response to post 4. Independently read Catching Fire, chapters 8 and 9. When you complete all 4 tasks, you can read your own book or visit the Games Tab on our website. Visit Hoyt Rocks 2014 now. Today you will have 20 mintues to silently read from Catching Fire. We left of on Chapter 8, page 106. If you finish the chapter, you may read ahead or read from your own book. After that, we will play Catching Fire BINGO! and YES, there will be prizes! May the odds be ever in your favor! *If you have not taken part 2 of the Benchmark Test: Point of View, you will need to do that first. Today you will be taking Part 2 of the Unit 1 District Benchmark Test. The focus of this test is Point of View. *We will also be filling out evaluation forms for Parent Teacher Conferences. *If you finish your test early, you are to independently read Catching Fire, Chapter 8 or your own book if you've already completed this chapter. After responding to both prompts, you will choose one of your written responses to answer into Blogger. Reminder: Break up each prompt and number the parts. Check the parts off as you respond. Chapter 6, pages 78-81 Contrast how Katniss and Peeta feel about what is expected at the banquet with the way members of the Capitol feel about what is expected. What emotional effect does this difference create? Chapter 7, pages 95-100 Describe how Gale's attitude toward running away with Katniss changes over time. What effect does this change in point of view have on the mood of the story. Use textual evidence to support your answer. After you have published your Catching Fire post, use the writing frame to write and publish a reflection on your learning of Unit 1 Objectives in Language Arts. *We will also be completing an online Gallop Poll *Students who need to take the SRI need to do so today. *Students needing to take the Story Elements section of the Benchmark Test need to do so today. Today we are going to read, read, and read! Our goal is to get through Chapters 6 & 7 of Catching Fire.
I will read aloud Chapter 6 and then you will have the option to independently or partner read Chapter 7. We will Blog about these two chapters next week. |
